Trails

The Lima River to Serra de Arga Equestrian Trail and the Serra de Arga Equestrian Trail—the latter forming a circular route—were created as part of the Equestrian Villages between Arga and Lima project, complementing the existing regional network of equestrian trails (see www.garranos.pt).

Together, these routes offer an unforgettable journey through some of Alto Minho's most remarkable landscapes, combining nature, adventure, cultural heritage and breathtaking scenery. They invite riders to explore a territory shaped over centuries by its people, traditions and unique natural environment.

Your journey begins on the tranquil banks of the Lima River, in the picturesque parish of Lanheses, before climbing towards the secluded and authentic mountain village of Cerquido, nestled on the southern slopes of the Serra de Arga. Here, amidst one of northern Portugal's most iconic mountain landscapes, you may encounter herds of Garrano horses roaming freely in their natural habitat.

From Cerquido, the adventure continues along the Serra de Arga Equestrian Trail, a circular itinerary that encircles the entire mountain massif. Following ancient rural tracks and traditional pastoral paths, the trail passes through the characteristic mountain villages of Arga de Cima, Arga de Baixo, Arga de São João, Dem, and finally Montaria, revealing the authentic character, landscapes and heritage of this extraordinary region at every stage of the journey.
